Chapter 21

Inked his name

Rituals in Indian weddings are well recognised around the world and are the most exciting ones, as they help to strengthen family bonds and bring people together, regardless of caste, creed, or position. Mehendi is one such ritual that every girl excitedly anticipates, especially the bride, who adorns her hands up to the elbows and legs up to the knees in beautiful patterns exclusively picked for brides. It is not only the elaborate pattern that fills the hands, but it also features the groom’s name concealed somewhere in the design, which the groom is supposed to hunt for and locate. It is a fun-filled ceremony that creates a lively atmosphere. Every member of the family, especially the ladies and girls, get their hands covered in unique henna patterns.

The wedding planners had set up roughly 15 different kiosks so that everyone could get their mehendi in privacy.

Nisha was dressed in a bright green lehenga that was elaborately embroidered and composed of long, net fabric. Intricate patterns and Swarovski crystals adorned the choli. The home was filled with women dressed in green, each with a smile on their faces. Friends were teasing Nisha about her upcoming wedding and honeymoon, while elders were gossiping around Daisy and Uma about the available girls for Anirudh and Alaksh when Daisy reminded them that Anirudh and Alisha are engaged to be married, and she’s waiting for Alisha’s articleship to finish so she may welcome her daughter-in-law home with an extravagant wedding.

Daisy’s announcement silenced all the gossipers. Everyone thought Alisha and Anirudh had split because they were never seen together at the market or social events.

The Mehendi ceremony started. Nisha hopped onto the swing and two artists started working on her. Other artists were being swarmed by girls and women, eagerly awaiting their turn. The latest Bollywood songs, perfect for the occasion, were playing in the background, entertaining the gathered guests. The Singhals and the Sabharwals were busy welcoming the guests ensuring their needs were met.

While everyone was occupied with the mehendi artists, Alisha was the only one chilling in a corner, chatting with her cousins, and enjoying the festivities. Daisy approached Alisha and led her to an artist, instructing them to apply a bridal design for her too. Her protests didn’t work on Daisy or Uma. She pouted, “Mom, Aunty, why bridal designs? Nisha is the bride, not me. I’ll get a simple arabic design on my hands. It will dry faster and I’ll get my hands back before Agasthya wakes up from his slumber.”

Uma, too, sided with Daisy and encouraged her to go for a bridal design, but Alisha didn’t budge.

“Mom, I have Agasthya to take care of.” Alisha glared at her mother.

“Take some time to pamper yourself, Alie; Nanny will take care of him; I’ll go if necessary.” Daisy gently guided her.

Alisha hesitated before saying, “Aunt Daisy, my baby is cranky around new faces. I’m afraid he won’t be comfortable with you.”

“I brought you up, along with my own three children. No need to stress; I’ve got plenty of experience with kids.
